Bilateral Stimulation

Good for when you're in the dental chair or waiting

Binaural beats is a kind of Bilateral stimulation. This refers to sounds (usually tones from a headset), visual movements (following a moving object back and forth across the perceptual field) or kinesthetic cues (tapping) which require tracking by the eyes, ears or body. There is input to one side of the brain or body and then the other, I like to think of it as a way to hook-up the right and left brain with the brain stem and mid-brain (our emotion and memory center). Today, the healing properties of bilateral stimulation are showing incredible promise for healing. FYI, walking is one of the easiest ways to get some bilateral stimulation.

Think about trying the Binaural Beats or other forms of bilateral stimulation when:

  • you're stuck in a mood
  • you can’t seem to figure out a problem
  • you feel easily irritated
  • you're overwhelmed

Binaural auditory beats is a type of sound therapy where each ear is presented with a different tone at the same time. The brain synthesizes the sounds into 1 tone and that action makes it deeply relaxing. Some binaural beats coax the brain into slower brainwave states producing a meditative state.

A Few of My Favorite Sources for Binaural Beats:

  • Equisync Sound Technologies (I’m not a spokesman for them but just like their product):

  • Insight Timer (you can get a free version of this on your phone’s app store). Make sure you listen with headphones so each ear gets the different tone input. This could be particularly helpful to use before and during dental procedures and if you have insomnia, pain, ptsd or general anxiety.
